WHEN IS RAPTOR NESTING SEASON?

In general, raptor nesting season is February-July in Arizona.

CAN I CLIMB DURING RAPTOR NESTING SEASON?

Nesting raptors are protected by the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act, 16 U.S.C. 703 (MBTA). PCC recognizes that any climbing area may be considered off limits, subject to the conditions. Do your part to be on the right side of the law (and the birds)—and have fun and be safe out there. In the Prescott area, we have two areas that are considered to be off limits from February 1st-July 15th:

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I ENCOUNTER RAPTORS WHILE CLIMBING?

  • First, give them space! If you are too close, a raptor will “swoop” or “dive-bomb” you while climbing nearby. A Peregrine Falcon will also likely also make a “kak-kak-kak” call.
  • Second, report this observation to the Prescott Climbers Coalition (form below) so that we can spread the word of the sighting and help other climbers in the community avoid the area.
  • Third, if you are connected on social media, publish your experience on the “Prescott Climbing Scene” Facebook Group.
